Join us for an exclusive opportunity to attend a workshop dedicated to practical guidance for successful grant writing for EMCRs. This interactive session will comprise of unpacking your challenges, aid you to build skills for future grant applications, and hear insights from two highly experienced presenters, Professor Sandie McCarthy and Professor Richard De Abreu Loureço, that will highlight:Â
- The art of Grantsmanship: combines robust science, critical need and marketing principals to persuade the NHMRC and MRFF to part with their money
- Practical advice on structuring your grant to engage your reviewersÂ
- Health Economics (HE): Not all grants need to include HE (& how to make that decision)Â
- The key aspects to include from an HE perspectiveÂ
- Presenting HE as an integrated aspect of the grant
Presenters

Professor Sandie McCarthy
Sandie McCarthy is the Dean Research, College of Nursing & Health Sciences at Flinders University. She has practised extensively in acute cancer care, including chemotherapy administration in rural and metropolitan settings. Her PhD investigated sociocultural issues related to breast cancer and while she mostly now undertakes intervention research, she has an interest in the sociological as well as clinical aspects of cancer care.

Professor Richard De Abreu Lourenço
Richard De Abreu Lourenço, is a Professor of Health Economics and Deputy Director at the Centre for Health Economics Research and Evaluation (CHERE), University of Technology Sydney. He is an experienced health economist who has a keen interest in applied economic evaluations, patient preference and quality of life and the economics of specialty health areas. Currently, he is the Program Lead for the Cancer Australia Cancer Research Economics Support Team, and the Senior Evaluator for CHERE’s Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) evaluation group. He is an investigator on a number of cancer clinical studies and studies investigating preferences for health care decision making.

- Must be a PC4 member (or have submitted an application)
- Must be attending PC4’s 2026 Scientific Symposium
- Priority is given to applicants with 10 or less research-active years
- Provide a short statement (up to 350 words): How will attending the workshop and symposium benefit your career?
Travel bursaries
PC4 is pleased to offer a limited number of travel bursaries (up to $400) to aid attendees traveling to Adelaide. This funding can only be used for attendees attending both the Pre-Symposium Workshop and the 2026 Scientific Symposium. The funding can be used for:
- Return economy flights
- 1 night’s accommodation
Please note: South Australian based attendees are not eligible to apply for the travel bursary. Payments will be made once proof of expenditure is provided.
Applications for the travel bursary will close on 20 June 2026. An initial confirmation of attendees and travel bursary recipients will be made by 12 July 2026. Any further offers will be based on remaining availability.

A PC4 team member will contact you to complete your workshop EOI. It is encouraged to complete this prior to 20 June 2026 to be considered for the travel bursary and first round of confirmed attendees as places for the workshop is limited.Â
