The Pre-Symposium Workshop: Grant Writing that Wins will provide practical guidance for successful grant writing for EMCRs. This interactive session will comprise of addressing common challenges, aid you to build skills for future grant applications, and hear insights from two highly experienced presenters, Professor Sandie McCarthy and Professor Richard De Abreu Lourenço, that will highlight:Â
- The art of Grantsmanship Â
- Practical advice on structuring your grant to engage your reviewersÂ
- Health Economics (HE): Not all grants need to include HE (& how to make that decision)Â
- The key aspects to include from an HE perspectiveÂ
- Presenting HE as an integrated aspect of the grant

Presenters

Professor Sandie McCarthy
Sandie McCarthy is the Dean Research, College of Health and Enablement at Flinders University. She has practised extensively in acute cancer care, including chemotherapy administration in rural and metropolitan settings. Her PhD investigated sociocultural issues related to breast cancer and while she mostly now undertakes intervention research, she has an interest in the sociological as well as clinical aspects of cancer care. Professor McCarthy has an impressive track record securing highly competitive grants and uses her knowledge and experience in this area to specialise in Category 1 grant coaching.

Professor Richard De Abreu Lourenço
Richard De Abreu Lourenço, is a Professor of Health Economics and Deputy Director at the Centre for Health Economics Research and Evaluation (CHERE), University of Technology Sydney. He is an experienced health economist who has a keen interest in applied economic evaluations, patient preference and quality of life and the economics of specialty health areas. Currently, he is the Program Lead for the Cancer Australia Cancer Research Economics Support Team, and the Senior Evaluator for CHERE’s Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) evaluation group. He is an investigator on a number of cancer clinical studies and studies investigating preferences for health care decision making.

- Must be a student (PhD, MD) or EMCR with 10 or less research-active years since PhD was awarded
