Towards precision cancer medicine for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cancer health equity a narrative review

Delivering cancer control at scale for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities is a national priority, necessitating leadership and co-design from these communities and significant involvement from the Aboriginal community-controlled health sector. The unique genomic variations in these populations impact standard and precision medicine, yet they are underrepresented in genomic studies and cancer research resources. Genomics-guided precision cancer medicine has the potential to reduce cancer health disparities by personalising prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management. Ensuring equity of access, developing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cancer workforce, and creating appropriate genome reference resources are crucial. Research must incorporate Indigenous data sovereignty principles and governance to protect rights and interests, alongside community engagement to address cultural and ethical considerations. Local and national guidelines are needed to establish best practices in genomics research with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.Read the full article here.
