Why should the poor die young? Closing the gap in cancer outcomes
Cancer Council Australia’s CEO (and presenter at our Scientific Symposium), Professor Sanchia Aranda, forecasts that by 2040 there will be a 72% increase in the number of Australians living with cancer or in remission. Data also revealed that in Australia those from low socio-economic backgrounds are 30% more likely to die of cancer than those from high socio-economic backgrounds.
There is a gap in cancer outcomes for our Indigenous Australian population, where incident rates from cancer are 10% higher than non-Indigenous Australians and mortality rates are 30% higher.
