The first issue of The Lancet Oncology for 2017 has provided an overview of cancer survivorship in the USA from different perspectives through their Series of five papers. These papers provide insight into the challenges around defining cancer survivors and who should provide follow-up care for this population. The role of primary care providers in caring for survivors is also featured. The series also outlines the current provision of integrated psychosocial services for cancer survivors following their treatment. Finally, it addresses how we can better measure the effectiveness of survivorship programs.
