Implementation of lung cancer screening in Europe: challenges and potential solutions: summary of a multidisciplinary roundtable discussion

International efforts to implement lung cancer screening have been triggered in response to large randomised trials that have shown significant reductions in lung cancer mortality with low-dose CT screening. This paper summarises a roundtable discussion convened by the European Society for Medical Oncology to explore challenges, potential solutions and the steps required for the implementation of lung cancer screening. The panel concluded that adequate evidence is available to suggest national health policy groups should begin to implement lung cancer screening across Europe. ‘Implementation Research Programmes’ were also recognised as opportunities to improve the screening process. 

This article adds to the current international conversations regarding lung cancer screening – including The National Targeted Lung Cancer Screening Program enquiry that was recently announced by Cancer Australia.
