Diagnosis of cancer as an emergency: a critical review of current evidence
This new review from Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology outlines the extent, causes and implications of a cancer diagnosis after an emergency presentation. A Key point raised was that a diagnosis through an emergency presentation was independent predictor of lower survival. 30% of patients diagnosed with cancer as an emergency presentation had a stage IV cancer. Overall, to reduce the number of cancer diagnoses through emergency presentations the review provides a series of recommendations for clinical practice, public health policy and for further research.
